Door County, WI: Surrounded by the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, Door County is a natural peninsula and is often referred to as The Cape Cod of the Midwest. Plunk in the middle of this beautiful, natural retreat is our little village, Fish Creek. This is the place where it all comes together: the shoreline, the bluffs overlooking the deep waters of Lake Michigan, offshore islands in view, and perhaps the most wonderful public park for year round activities. Loggers and fishermen began settling Fish Creek in 1853, and in 1855, entrepreneur Asa Thorp built the first dock in Fish Creek. At the time, Asa’s dock was the only refueling point for ships between Fort Howard (Green Bay) and Rock Island. In the earlier days, Fish Creek thrived as a fishing and lumber center, but by 1900, tourists were already making the village a summer destination, and the tiny hamlet soon became a resort community. There have been considerable changes in the last 150 years, but many of the buildings erected in the late 1800’s still stand, and Fish Creek maintains its small village charm. |
